So do you really think you have what it takes to be a marketer? You are a small business owner, and now you want to be a marketer. Well if I can’t talk you out of it. Here’s some advice.
- Take your time. It takes time to make a good marketing plan. Don’t rely on just one afternoon’s work to set your marketing calendar for the next year. You didn’t build your business in one day, but you could crush it in one afternoon if that’s all you dedicate to your marketing.
- Seek out help. You may think you know your industry, but do you really know your customers? Market Research is key to understanding your customer. Ask them what they want. But don’t ask those three or four super loyal customers. Ask the ones who bought once and never came back
- Commit. Commit to a full plan. Know how all the pieces work together. Don’t just say, “well I’ll just do an ad this week, whatever my ad reps suggests”. You business success is up to you, don’t think your ad rep is the expert that will make your business grow. They are paid to sell you the medium, understand the medium, and present your message in the medium. It’s up to you to craft that message.
